Who We Are
We are Molly and Melissa, two moms with boys (well, men really) who have special needs. We spend time together sipping whiskey and trying to figure out how to navigate the path to adulthood for our boys and families.
We talk about all things caregiving – the good, the bad and everything in between. Our focus is on the caregivers, those deep in the trenches of navigating the complex path of supporting a person with special needs throughout adulthood.
Why Perfectly ~ Aged?
TBH, we both like whiskey…and bourbon…and wine… a lot. Like all those things, we get better with age, right??? But how do our kids with special needs age? As Melissa likes to say, “We have entered the not so cute years.” When they were little, their quirks and short comings were often overcome with cuteness. Things we moms use to joke about over drinks when they were toddlers – tantrums, toilet issues, running through the house naked….aren’t so cute when they are adults. Yet that is the reality that many special needs caregivers live with.
How do we as the caregivers navigate these no so cute years? Most kids outgrow the wild teen years, fly the nest, and while parents still worry about them, they no longer have to manage their day-to-day needs. Their parents high-five to the empty nest and begin planning their beach retirement.
But not us. We are still deep in the trenches, navigating the complex world of supporting our kids day-to-day adult needs without the support we had during their younger years. We may have all hated the IEP years, but those were nothing compared to the falling off the cliff with no help or parachute adult years.
So join us as we navigate this crazy world of adult caregiving together. We will laugh together, cry together, scream and rant together.
And most importantly, we will celebrate our kids together, because to us, they are aging perfectly.
