My son got offered a summer job today. That seems like such a simple right of passage for a teen, but when you are a special needs parent, it’s a huge milestone.
And even more amazing, it is not through a job placement program. It is because an ordinary person saw his potential and asked him if he would like a summer job helping teach swim lessons. And asked him! Not me!
He will be paired with an experienced instructor and assist with lessons just like all the other new recruits. No job coach, no hovering, no being treated different, just a job with a partner.
Such a simple, beautiful act of inclusion that restores my faith in humanity and reminds me that there are people in the world that see and value our kids.
Happy summer!
